About RelateFirst

Because relationships come first.

RelateFirst is a leadership and human-development platform built around a simple conviction: how we understand ourselves and relate to others influences how we lead, parent, partner, work and contribute to community.

Our values

Justice • Mercy • Humility

These three values describe how RelateFirst works with people, not only what we teach. They shape our leadership, our programmes and the way we hold relationships.

Justice

Do what is right.

Justice calls us to act with integrity, fairness, responsibility, courage and respect for the dignity of others.

Mercy

Relate with compassion.

Mercy calls us to respond to people with empathy, kindness, grace and a willingness to understand and repair.

Humility

Lead through service.

Humility calls us to remain self-aware, teachable and respectful in the way we exercise influence.

The name

Why RelateFirst?

The name RelateFirst carries several meanings, each reflecting the developmental and relational philosophy of the platform.

Relate first

Before reacting, judging, controlling or withdrawing, learn to relate.

Healthy influence begins with understanding, connection and responsible response.

Relationships first

Relationships are foundational to human development, wellbeing and leadership.

We develop, regulate, learn and lead within relationships rather than in isolation.

First relationships

Our earliest caregiving relationships contribute to how we learn safety, trust, connection and emotional regulation.

These early experiences can be important, but they do not determine who a person becomes.

First years

Relational development begins from the earliest stages of life.

Pregnancy, infancy, caregiving and early development are where RelateFirst START begins its work with parents and families.

Because relationships come first.

Research & Science

Our psychological and relational foundations.

RelateFirst is evidence-informed and draws from multiple areas of psychological, developmental and relational knowledge rather than relying on a single theory. Its foundations include attachment science, emotional regulation, developmental psychology, interpersonal neurobiology, family and systems thinking, and relationship science — each held with careful language and a conviction that growth remains possible across the lifespan.

Conceptual framework

The NeuroRelational Framework

Understanding how nervous-system processes, emotional regulation, relationships and development interact across the lifespan.

01

Development

How emotional and relational capacities develop and change across different stages of life.

02

Neurobiology

How the nervous system responds to experiences of safety, challenge, stress and connection.

03

Regulation

How people recognise, manage and recover from emotional and physiological activation.

04

Behaviour

How internal experiences can become visible through communication, avoidance, conflict, protection, connection and other patterns of response.

05

Relationships

How interactions with caregivers, partners, family, peers, colleagues and leaders influence experience.

06

Growth

How awareness, learning, supportive relationships, practice and appropriate professional intervention can support development and change.

These six domains continually influence one another. The framework is offered as one perspective that helps us understand relational and developmental experience — it is a RelateFirst conceptual framework, not a diagnostic model or an independently validated instrument.

What RelateFirst is.

  • Developmental
  • Educational
  • Relational
  • Evidence-informed
  • Practical
  • Community-oriented
  • Leadership-focused
  • Inclusive

What RelateFirst is not.

  • A diagnostic system
  • A replacement for psychotherapy
  • A substitute for psychological assessment
  • Based on only one psychological theory
  • Restricted to corporate leadership
  • Restricted to a particular faith community

We hold these distinctions gently. They exist to help people find the right kind of support at the right time, and to keep our claims honest.

Education when appropriate. Professional care when needed.

RelateFirst programmes provide education, development and community support. Some needs require professional counselling, psychological assessment or specialist intervention.

RelateFirst Professional Care is being developed to provide appropriate referral pathways to qualified professionals in each location. The directory is not yet active.
